National Public Health Week
A Healthier America: One Community at a Time
April 5 – 11, 2010
It’s easy to take public health for granted – largely because bad things don’t happen when working. Many of us take for granted that polio is no longer a threat in the Americas, water from a drinking fountain is clean and that lead no longer contaminates our gasoline and paint. Since 1995, the American Public Health Association has reserved one week in early April to recognize the unsung heroes of public health who advocate life-saving practices ranging from immunizations to helmet safety and everything in between. The Colorado Health Foundation joins APHA in saluting the contributions of public health and its workforce here in Colorado and across the nation. [Learn more]

Foundation President and CEO Anne Warhover addresses policymakers
|
The 2009 Colorado Health Report Card, an annual publication ranking the health of Coloradans, was released to an audience of lawmakers and policymakers at an event in downtown Denver on Thursday, February 11.
Each year, the Colorado Health Foundation collaborates with the Colorado Health Institute (CHI) to compile data from a variety of sources to provide a comprehensive picture of the health of Colorado’s residents. The Report Card ranks our health status on 38 indicators, organized into five life stages: Healthy Beginnings, Healthy Children, Healthy Adolescents, Healthy Adults and Healthy Aging. A grade is assigned to each to show how Coloradans fare at every age.
Anne Warhover, Foundation president and CEO, led a discussion of the results of this year’s Report Card at an event held at the Colorado History Museum. Pamela Hanes, PhD, president and CEO of CHI, presented an analysis of the results, and James Todd, MD, pediatrician and professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, discussed how Colorado’s worsening rankings impact the health of the state’s children. Gov. Bill Ritter, Jr. also presented at the event, discussing the downward trend in children’s health and his plans to improve the health of all Coloradans in 2010.

The Food Factor: November 16, 2009 in Denver, Colo.
The Colorado Health Foundation hosted an informative presentation and discussion about how the inaccessibility of healthy, fresh and affordable food negatively impacts health.
Allison Karpyn, PhD, of the Pennsylvania-based Food Trust released the results of a new study that finds many Colorado communities that have poor access to supermarkets also have high incidences of diet-related diseases. Richard J. Jackson, MD, MPH, professor and chair of the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the UCLA School of Public Health and author of Urban Sprawl and Public Health, discussed how where we live plays an important role in how healthy we are.

Bringing Health Home: Sept. 21–22, 2009 in Pueblo, Colo.
The Colorado Health Foundation hosted a two-day statewide conference on local health initiatives intended to help communities in Colorado leverage resources and develop sustainable financing solutions to increase coverage and/or expand access to health care services. Since health care is delivered locally, communities will be critical to the success of any reform effort.
On the first day, presenters from across the nation and the state shared their stories of success to inspire Colorado communities to think about the potential of a locally-developed coverage program to expand access to health care services. Day two allowed community teams an opportunity to work to identify concrete next steps and create a plan toward developing a local coverage initiative. Facilitators worked with teams to outline a letter of intent for the Colorado Health Foundation's "Next Step" grants.
