What We Fund

We consider applications that are in close alignment with our three outcomes and exhibit the ability to produce one or more of our Measurable Results. Typically, we fund the following types of grants:

  • Project – Project grants are a specific set of activities carried out over a defined time period to achieve one or more Measurable Results.
  • General Operating – These grants support an organization's day-to-day expenses, enabling it to carry out its mission. General operating grants will only be made to organizations whose mission aligns with our vision and will help us to achieve one or more of our Measurable Results.
  • Capacity-Building – Capacity-building grants strengthen an organization by enhancing financing, governance, planning and other business capabilities. Capacity-building activities should ultimately lead to the realization of one or more of our Measurable Results.
  • Capital – On occasion, we will consider funding requests to improve an organization's facilities or infrastructure. Funding might include, but is not limited to, new construction, expansion, renovation, or replacement of an existing facility or piece of equipment. In order to be considered, capital efforts must have a demonstrable link to one or more of our Measurable Results.

What the Foundation Does Not Fund
We do not award grants to organizations that discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, citizenship status, age, disability, sexual orientation or veteran status. Generally, the Foundation does not make grants to or for the following:

  • Individuals
  • Programs that require membership in a certain religion or advance a particular religious faith (faith-based organizations may be eligible for funding if they welcome and serve all members of the community regardless of religious belief)
  • For-profit organizations or programs operated by, or for the benefit of, for-profit organizations
  • Debt retirement
  • Annual fund drives
  • Fundraising events
  • Endowments

Who Can Apply?
Generally, the Colorado Health Foundation makes grants to the following types of organizations:

  • Organizations classified as tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3)
  • Public agencies, including state and local governments

New or emerging organizations without 501(c)(3) status are permitted to apply through a tax-exempt organization that is acting as a fiscal sponsor. On occasion we will also make grants to organizations with 501(c)(4) status.
If you have any questions about your organization's eligibility for funding, please do not hesitate to contact us at (303) 953-3600.
