Brenda Sears

Program Officer

Brenda believes everyone should have access to quality education, jobs, safety, housing, nutritious food, health care, civil rights and a clean environment. She values the fact that her job allows her to partner with communities working to make the world more equitable and just. Always drawn to heroic tales of good trumping evil — stories like The X-Men and The Hunger Games — Brenda’s work helps fulfill her desire to lead through service.

She enjoys finding great answers to hard questions and believes you find those answers through listening — especially to the stories of people who are often written off and cast aside. Brenda has always had faith in the power of people to come together to drive social change and believes it is important to think differently, act creatively and learn continuously. In her free time, she enriches her life with a wide array of books and classes, ranging from arts and crafts to home and garden.

Brenda has been with the Foundation since 2010. Her accomplishments include placing second in the office hula-hoop contest and developing an advocacy funding opportunity which created space for everyday people to participate in the decisions that impact their lives. She has been honored to work with groups working to eliminate the school to prison pipeline, expand renters’ rights and change institutional policies to be more inclusive.

In her pre-Foundation life, Brenda worked with hospitals, medical schools, professional societies, health departments, health insurance companies, business leaders, policymakers and community members to develop culturally competent health promotion initiatives.

Brenda is most grateful for the wisdom, guidance, support, patience and the faith she receives from her own personal heroes — her family, which includes two dogs, her parents, her husband and her son.
