Building Better Health: Morgan's Story

Morgan BBH

Morgan Kinney was struggling to set up a business and a life for himself and his recent bride.

As a trained counselor, Kinney had the ability to thrive but needed health coverage to help him bridge the gap to success. With the mandate to be enrolled in insurance fast approaching, he signed up for Colorado’s recently expanded Medicaid coverage.

“You get used to not having health insurance, and you take it for granted that if anything were to happen you are kind of screwed,” said Kinney. “When I got Medicaid I began taking care of issues that I had been living with because I hadn’t had the ability to seek care. It’s been great.”

Kinney said he doesn’t plan to stay on Medicaid long as he is working multiple jobs to get his dreams off the ground. “This is not a long-term strategy. This is something that helps give me security in a transition period of my life,” Kinney stated.

“I want to show people that the average person who is working hard can benefit from Medicaid. However, I am hoping to be off of it within a half year – tops.”
