A healthy community, like a healthy person, is built on safety and belonging, where everyone feels valued and protected. Yet, recent immigration raids in Colorado and federal executive actions targeting transgender people are threatening that core component of health and well-being. These actions instill fear and create a hostile environment that serves no one in Colorado. When people are forced into the shadows, we all lose the ideas, talents and contributions that make our state thrive.
These actions also erode people’s trust in core institutions in their community, making it more difficult for nonprofits, schools, hospitals and community organizations to provide essential support. When fear prevents people from seeking help—whether for housing, healthcare or other services—it deepens isolation and puts entire communities at risk. A strong community is one where people feel safe, supported and connected. Right now, that sense of belonging is under attack.
The consequences of this fear and isolation extend beyond individual well-being. Belonging is not a privilege; it’s a necessity. Yet, policies targeting immigrants, refugees, people of color and transgender individuals, particularly transgender youth, send a harmful message that their dignity, identity, visibility and belonging are up for debate. These attacks undermine the diversity, resilience and shared commitment that make our communities strong.
To support organizations advancing equity and justice in the face of these challenges, the Foundation offers a range of resources, including Advocacy Rapid Response Funding for short-term, time-sensitive efforts focused on advocacy, organizing and policy change. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. For more information about Advocacy Rapid Response or any of the Foundation’s funding, please contact a program officer.
