I'm filled with excitement and anticipation as I prepare for the trip to Keystone for the annual Colorado Health Symposium, which will be held July 24 through 26 this year. This event is a highlight of my year, offering the invaluable opportunity to reconnect with many of you, gain essential knowledge, and find inspiration in our shared commitment to advancing health equity and justice. There is nothing like coming together with other health equity champions, and I eagerly look forward to the impactful discussions and connections we will make.
Reflecting on the theme of this year’s Symposium, (Re)Writing Narratives: Advancing Equity and Justice, I’ve been thinking deeply about the power of narratives in shaping our perceptions and actions. Narratives can uplift and inspire, but they can also marginalize and oppress. Building on last year’s theme of People Powered Transformation, we aim to harness our power and shape narratives that reflect our shared values. Doing this work is crucial, as rewriting cultural narratives challenges harmful stereotypes, influences equitable policy changes and strengthens communities.
Why focus on (Re)Writing Narratives?
The urgency of this work is underscored as we witness the harmful and often downright false narratives that play out across our society, amplified even more during an election year. This is why our gathering in Keystone is so important. Narratives shape our understanding of the world and influence our actions. By rewriting narratives that marginalize and exclude, we can create a more inclusive and equitable society. This involves recognizing and elevating the voices that have been historically silenced and working together to reshape the stories that define our communities.
At this year’s Symposium, we will hear from individuals who have been leading the charge in advancing health equity and racial justice. Through engaging discussions, interactive exchange sessions, and collaborative workshops, we aim to inspire attendees to harness the power of their own stories to (re)write societal narratives and drive meaningful change.
For the broader community, whether attending in person or engaging with us through other channels, your voice and your story matter. Join us in this vital work of rewriting narratives to advance equity and justice. Together, let's unlock the power within us all, reshape the narratives that define us, and pave the way for a brighter, healthier future for all Coloradans.
See you in Keystone!
